BRPI: Public Programs (BEY + BCN)

Community Dialogues & Exhibitions About Urban Politics, Active Citizenship, Activism, and Data

In 2023-24, Studio Madane conducted community talks, online seminars, and presented multimedia public exhibits about BRPI in Barcelona and Beirut. It was the public-facing counterpart to the BRPI fieldwork designed to take urban research out of the academic archive and back into the street, in line with the studio's broader view that civic transformation begins where research meets public discourse. A panel discussion that reflects on the outputs of BRPI later took place in Beirut under the title: How can we mobilize ourselves and our peers in neighborhoods toward political transformation?

In Beirut

The exhibition stationed a dynamic multimedia collection across one space: sociopolitical mappings, interactive 3D models, renders of the architectural proposal, ethnographic studies, AR walkthroughs of the architectural proposal, photographic archives, audiovisual documentaries, and printed-and-digital editions of the research literature and workflow. Each station was designed as an entry point, a way for visitors with no background of the tools and know how of the developed analysis and reform proposals to walk into a complex civic inquiry.

The interactive panel discussion that accompanied the exhibition was moderated by Nader Akoum (Founder, Studio Madane) with activists Nahida Khalil (Urbanist & Lecturer) and Charbel Chaaya (Constitutional law expert). The conversation moved from research findings to political implications: Khalil emphasized that the studio's direction was citizenship empowerment and the return of ownership in the city; Chaaya argued that residents themselves must mobilize, take stances, and exert pressure for change to manifest. Visitors ranged across disciplines: youth from Studio Madane's working groups, urban practitioners, activists, teachers, students, future members, company representatives and members of the general public. The exhibition was used as a platform for live dialogue about the future of the corridor and the role of civic empowerment in political transformation across the whole city.

In Barcelona

The Barcelona exhibition was the reference case that the Beirut exhibit built on. It was the pilot for public engagement and curatorial work where, again, a body of complex urban research was translated into multi-format public discourse. It was a full day where architects, technologists, managers, activists, lecturers, linguists, and artists from Europe and the Arab world gathered to reflect on the work via their lived experience and professional know how. The following photos are from that engagement on February 18th, 2023, in Barcelona.

This also led to dialogues and online seminars, including Studio Madane’s invitation to participate in the MED Talks in December 2023, which focused on the implementation and governance of urban change while fostering dialogue between the northern and southern shores of the Euro-Mediterranean region. Through this contribution, Studio Madane shared insights with direct partners seeking to advance work in the southern Mediterranean, while also opening discussions on how different levels of public administration can better hear and respond to our voices.
